About freaking time - or - Zogby Poll Finds Suprising Support For Impeachment

From the excellent Think Progress:
A newly-released Zogby poll indicates that 42 percent of voters say that “if it is found that President Bush did not tell the truth about his reasons for going to war with Iraq, Congress should hold him accountable through impeachment.”

That is a stunningly high number when you consider that only 41 percent of the American public supported Congress proceeding with impeachment hearings against President Clinton in late September 1998. This was after President Clinton’s grand jury testimony was made public and just before the House Judiciary Committee approved a resolution recommending an impeachment inquiry.

Re: Great Speech (STUFF!~ WORTH CLICKING TO GET TOO

How is there anything close to open minded about this?  Set aside that it's also completely wrong with respect the the relative dollar amounts spent on the war versus foreign aid - we spend well less that 40 billion dollars per year on foreign aid.  This would cover 3 months of action in iraq at current run rates.

It should also be noted that this kind of rhetoric was used to justify the US' lack of involvement in WWII prior to Japan's attack at pearl harbor.  As we've learned before, the price of isolationism is very high.  You do not create the world you want to live in by running away from it.

Canada, Mexico, France, Germany, et al should be applauded for opposing the illegal, immoral, bloodthirsty adventure in iraq.  They have shown themselves to be more in touch with our ideals that we are.  Remember what happened:  We were attacked by islamic fundamentalists from Afghanistan that we trained in the 80s to fight the Soviet invasion.  Following this devastating blow to our country, we were told by our president that Iraq posed an imminent danger to our security.  We know from a variety of different sources now that this was entirely a fabrication by the administration.  We know that "the facts were being fixed to fit the policy" i.e., we were lied to by our government to support an unnecessary, costly , and bloody war that has only increased the terrorist threat against the US, not decreased it.

Furthermore, we have dangerously weakened the power of our military which is overstreched, exhausted and missing its recruiting goals.  Beyond that, we are responsible for the 100k iraqi civilian deaths that have occurred since the beginning of the invasion.  In addition to all of the above, we operate a extra-legal prison camp in cuba, in the name of the war on terror.  We are convinced that we have terrorists there, yet we are unwilling to allow our legal process to work.  We have even held, however suspect, US citizens indefinitely, without charges.  There are repeated, corroborated accounts (from the FBI even) of prisoner torture at guantanamo bay.

How can we claim any moral superiority over anyone?  How can we have any indignation at the countries that have opposed us?  How can naive, ignorant and stunningly shortsighted can this nation be to think that anything in the note below is somehow of value, or to be admired?

This is exactly what the country must oppose.

This would be a great speech.

WOULDN'T IT BE GREAT TO TURN ON THE TV AND HEAR ANY U.S. PRESIDENT, DEMOCRAT OR REPUBLICAN GIVE THE FOLLOWING SPEECH?

My Fellow Americans:
As you all know, the defeat of Iraq regime has been completed.

Since congress does not want to spend any more money on this war, our mission in Iraq is complete.

This morning I gave the order for a complete removal of all American
forces from Iraq. This action will be complete within 30 days. It is now to begin the reckoning.

Before me, I have two lists. One list contains the names of countries
which have stood by our side during the Iraq conflict. This list is short.
The United Kingdom, Spain, Bulgaria, Australia, and Poland are some of the countries listed there.

The other list contains everyone not on the first list. Most of the
world's nations are on that list. My press secretary will be distributing copies of both lists later this evening.

Let me start by saying that effective immediately, foreign aid to those nations on List 2 ceases immediately and indefinitely. The money saved during the first year alone will pretty much pay for the costs of the Iraqi war

The American people are no longer going to pour money into third world Hell-holes and watch those government leaders grow fat on corruption.

Need help with a famine? Wrestling with an epidemic? Call France.

In the future, together with Congress, I will work to redirect this money toward solving the vexing social problems we still have at home. On that note, a word to terrorist organizations. Tangle with us and we will hunt you down and eliminate you and all your friends from the face of the earth.

Thirsting for a gutsy country to terrorize? Try France, or maybe
China.

To Israel and the Palestinian Authority. Yo, boys. Work out a peace deal now. Just note that Camp David is closed. Maybe all of you can go to Russia for negotiations. They have some great palaces there. Big tables, too. I am ordering the immediate severing of diplomatic relations with France, Germany, and Russia. Thanks for all your help, comrades. We are retiring from NATO as well. Bon chance, mes amis.

I have instructed the Mayor of New York City to begin towing the many UN diplomatic vehicles located in Manhattan with more than two unpaid parking tickets to sites where those vehicles will be stripped, shredded and crushed. I don't care about whatever treaty pertains to this. You creeps have tens of thousands of unpaid tickets. Pay those tickets tomorrow or watch your precious
Benzes, Beamers, and limos be turned over to some of the finest chop shops in the world. I love New York .

A special note to our neighbors. Canada is on List 2. Since we are likely to be seeing a lot more of each oher, you folks might want to try not pissing us off for a change.

Mexico is also on List 2. President Fox and his entire corrupt government really need an attitude adjustment. I will have a couple extra tanks and infantry divisions sitting around. Guess where I am going to put em? Yep, border security. So start doing something with your oil.
Oh, by the way, the United States is abrogating the NAFTA
treaty - starting now.

We are tired of the one-way highway.

It is time for America to focus on its own welfare and its own citizens Some will accuse us of isolationism. I answer them by saying, "darn tootin."

Nearly a century of trying to help folks live a decent life around the
world has only earned us the undying enmity of just abot everyone on the planet. It is time to eliminate hunger in America. It is time to eliminate homelessness in America. It is time to eliminate World Cup Soccer from America. To the nations on List 1, a final thought. Thanks guys. We owe you and we won't forget.

To the nations on List 2, a final thought. Drop dead.

God bless America.
Thank you and good night.

President Bush may not like the numbers, but I sure do

At the risk of saying "I told you so" to the rest of the country, I'd like to say "I TOLD YOU SO!!!"

The rest of the country is finally waking up to the fact that Iraq is a horrible quagmire - that it has not made us safer, and that it was in no way worth the lives or money it has cost.

The President, also known as the lame-duck-in-chief, faces falling approval numbers, a domestic agenda that is DOA, and a revolting republican majority in both houses.

Given all this, with the election only 7 months ago, all I have to ask is "WHY THE HELL DID THE COUNTRY KEEP HIM IN THE FIRST PLACE?!"

The only think I can hope at this point is this: maybe this will be the same kind of discrediting blow that Barry Goldwater's defeat was in 1964.

We can only dream :)
